One of the characters Chris meets in the novel is Ron Franz
He is an old man that has had a very depressing life, but his life gets a little brighter when he meets Chris McCandless. He is impressed with Chris' intelligence and his slight ability to survive. Even though the two get along in these chapters of the book we realize Chris is not trying to make and deep connections with these people but Ron Franz wants to adopt Chris, and Chris politely refuses but sends Ron Franz himself on an adventure.
